Phonics ~ Letters and Sounds

The ‘Letters and Sounds’ programme is used in Key Stage 1 to develop phonological awareness. There is a 20 minute discrete session each day where children are grouped by ability across the key stage. Children are given weekly word lists to practise at home and are tested weekly.

We use a rigorous approach to assessment where children’s progress is assessed half termly to ensure that they are working within the correct group. The emphasis on this teaching is pace, variety and fun activities to develop sound knowledge to segment and blend and therefore raise standards in both reading and writing.

Children who have not completed the ‘Letters and Sounds’ Programme upon entering Key Stage 2 will be given the opportunity to continue their learning during regular and well planned interventions that suit their learning style.
